Chronological Placement Notes: Present day portions of novel take place immediately following those in Vulcan's Soul Book 1: Exodus (which are given as "one year following the end of the Dominion War"). The ancient flashback scenes to the time of the Vulcan "Sundering" and arrival at the planets that would one day be known as Romulus and Remus do not give exact dates but the Star Trek Timeliners (referenced at the Memory Beta site) places the events as occurring in the year 326 A.D. (the Timeliners' timeline says "326-753").

The ancient flashback scenes to early Vulcan events (including the characters of Karatek and Surak, and the Vulcan exodus) range from 280 to 380 A.D. In addition to these two primary time frames, there is also a brief prologue that takes place soon following the Next Generation episode, "The Neutral Zone", in 2364, and a chapter showing Admiral Chekov's reaction to the start of the Dominion War in 2373.
